Tony Leung Chiu-Wai was born on 27th June 1962 in British Hong Kong. He is an actor and singer one of Asia’s most successful and internationally recognized actors. He was named “small Tiger” among the Five Tiger Generals of TVB and has won many international acting prizes, including the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actor for his performance in Wong Kar-wai’s film”In the Mood of Love”.

Tony was also named by CNN as one of Asia’s 25 Greatest Actors of All Time. He is known for his collaborations with director Wong Kar-Wai with whom has worked on seven films. Tony also appeared in the Venice Film Festival Golden-Lion Winning films.

1. Tony is a formerly trained actor

Tony’s friend Stephen Chiau was the one who to Tony about TVB training school where initially Tony had no interest at all. He sent an application letter to the TVB school after following his friend’s advice. In 1982, he got admission to the school and in no time gained his star status since his acting talent caught the directors by surprise.

He got so determined and ambitious after he realized that the only thing he could do better than anybody else was acting and also the only way to make his mother proud. He gained his status after a kid’s show “430 space shuttle” and in 1984, his popularity exploded after the release of “Duke of Mount Deer”.

2. He didn’t have an easy upbringing during his childhood

Tony was born in Hong Kong to a family of Taishan, Guangdong ancestry. His childhood filled with quarrels and arguments about money from his parents led to Tony’s mischievous behavior at an early age. His personality changed when his father a chronic gambler, left them when he was 8years.

Tony and his sister were brought up by his mother. He was always silent and ashamed to let anyone know that he didn’t have a father which was uncommon in the 1960s. He went t a private school but quit at the age of 15 due to financial difficulties.

3. He’s not into any active social media account

It’s a common thing for celebrities these days to have an active social media presence. Leung, who married actress Carina Lau is an exception instead since he had a Weibo account that he lastly updated in August 2018 when he promoted his movie “Europe Raiders”.Tony doesn’t have any other verified accounts on social media platforms. Staying off probably helps him maintain his privacy.

4. He has a happy marriage life

Leung publicly dated fellow TVB actress Margie Tsang from 1882 to 1988 in an in and off again relationship. He briefly dated Kitty lai during one of his breakups with Tsang before they broke up completely in 1988. He got into a relationship with Carina Lau in 1989. Today Leung and Carina are one of Hong Kong’s biggest celebrity couples. They dated for 19 years before marrying in 2008 in Bhutan in royal fashion.

5. He gets very invested in the characters he plays 

Playing a character role in a film is never an easy task for it takes a lot from creating the character’s personality, creating curiosity around the character, to discovering own imagination and more which is the most important part of acting. In Tony’s case, he has never had an issue with it. He said once he is committed to a role he goes very deep into it even when he’s not working. He keeps studying the script about 40 or maybe 50 times and sometimes he talks to the scriptwriter more invention.

6. Tony is a Buddhist

Religion plays a big role in Tony’s life. He participated in donations to constructions of Buddhist institutions. His marriage was performed in a Buddhist ceremony, he also attends Buddhist gatherings. Its believed his religion is a part of what keeps him grounded although it’s unclear whether or not he was brought up in the faith. He appeared pro bobo in the Bhutanese Buddhist film, Hema Hema; “Sing me a song while I wait”.

Leung has a comprehensive set of awards that he has won in a career that began in the 1980s. He earned the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for the “In the Mood for Love” film. He is also a seven-time winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards and a three-time winner at the Golden Horse Film Awards, holding the records for most awards in the Best Actor category. In the “East Asian Film Stars” book, Tony is described as undoubtedly one of the most successful and widely praised Hong Kong actors of his generation.

9. Tony loves hanging out by the water

Tony work as an actor is one of the most successful and internationally recognized actors in Asia. His job has been a huge part of his life for a very long period of time but it is certainly not the only thing he has an interest in. He has a little bit of an adventurous side where during his free time he loves spending time by the water for he has a passion for skiing and also visiting the beach.
