Victor Wembanyama Injury History: Should we be Worried?

Thanks to his on-court abilities and brilliance, Victor Wembanyama has established himself as a household figure in the sport of basketball. Victor has been drawing attention everywhere he goes despite never having played in the NBA and receiving shout-outs from NBA legendary figures. In his most recent games against American basketball teams, he went on to demonstrate why he is the subject of so much buzz.

When Wembanyama faced off against 2023 NBA Draft Competitor Scoot Henderson in that game with G-leagues Ignite, he elevated his magical prowess to greater levels, recording back-to-back displays of over 30 points.

Who is Victor Wembanyama?

Victor plays for Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A as a professional basketball player from France. He was born in Le Chesnay, France, on January 4, 2004. He is thought to be one of the best players of his generation, and the 2023 NBA draft is predicted to see him selected first overall. He joined Nanterre 92 in the LNB Pro A in 2019 to start his professional career.

Two years later, he changed teams and lasted just one season at ASVEL before capturing the Pro A title. Wembanyama took on a significant role when he joined Metropolitans 92 in 2022. Wembanyama also plays for the French basketball team. At the youth level, he has led his country to two silver medals, most notably at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Cup, where he set the FIBA record for the most blocks in a single game.

It’s not surprising that this young athlete has taken the sports world by storm given his remarkable résumé. Given that he is set to be selected in the NBA draft, Victor has been impressive for a while and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. He performs at a high-level thanks to his agility and quickness, although he might not be too careful to prevent injuries.

At least over their careers, all athletes experience this injury phase and Victor cannot be too careful to not join the list. Wembanyama’s recent play has only solidified his standing as the predicted top choice in the 2023 Draft, prompting some to wonder if he will have to miss the remainder of the French campaign to reduce the risk of injury before the draft upcoming June.

The most important duty of an athlete is to keep themselves healthy while participating in sports, but Victor has had certain health problems that are cause for concern. Victor has missed several pivotal games in the past few seasons due to injuries he has sustained throughout the past few years. The top NBA clubs interested in selecting the athlete in the 2023 NBA draft are also concerned about his injuries in addition to his team, his supporters, and himself.

Victor was able to participate in only half of the games during the season he spent at ASVEL, but he was unable to participate in the playoffs due to an unspecified muscular injury.
Victor, who is 7′ 4″ tall and has an 8-foot wingspan, is unquestionably a big guy who will play in the NBA. Although he is a power forward, his skill set is of an extraterrestrial type, and he exhibits guard-like talents. Victor is anticipated to tire out quickly because of the characteristics that have been demonstrated by athletes earlier in his stature.

Recent high-pick drafts show that taller athletes have missed a greater percentage of games than their shorter counterparts. Throughout their careers, NBA players over 6’9″ in height missed 17.9% of their possible games in the regular season and playoffs due to injury, compared to just 13.5% for players under 6’8″ in height. As height rises, the percentage of games missed typically rises as well. Nearly 24% of games were missed by players 7’0″ or taller.

Yao Ming is an outstanding example of a tall athlete who struggled with injuries. Both prestigious achievements and terrible injuries characterized Yao Ming’s career. Yao announced his retirement from the NBA after eight seasons due to lower body problems, including a left ankle that had undergone surgery.

The injury-plagued Yao, who was by far the finest player from China, retired before reaching the zenith of his career. He was compelled to end his great career as a result. There have been a few drawbacks for Victor as a result of his extensive basketball career. These have been significantly impacted by injuries, and the following describes the young athlete’s current injury journey:

Victor was sidelined from December 12, 2020, to March 13, 2021, due to a fibula stress fracture he sustained while still playing for Espoirs Nanterre. Victor had previously suffered from a fractured finger, which required him to miss the action from 6 November to 2 December 2021.

Victor was forced to sit out of the team’s game against Zenit Saint Petersburg on December 15, 2021, due to a bone contusion in his shoulder blade. On February 11, 2022, he returned and faced Panathinaikos. His latest scare was in June 2022 when he suffered a Psoas muscle injury and was forced to miss the season remaining.

Despite his many injuries, none of them has prevented the athlete from reaching new heights. Time and time again, he has conquered every obstacle presented by an injury. As seen by his zeal, Victor aims at defying the stereotype of every tall player by outlasting them all. It is anticipated that he will establish himself and play similarly to players in the NBA who are comparable to him in that he can collect the ball in the short post and post up at the same time.

He will likely play more as a face-up person than a player who tries to back guys down. He is a dangerous force because of how he handles and shoots the basketball. Wembanyama can play in the NBA at his current stature, but getting stronger will improve his defensive ability even though his playing style will play a larger role.

Some NBA fans have advised his coaches and support staff to rest the player to keep him healthy and preserve him for the draft, but the industrious Victor can’t stop doing what he enjoys most because, after all, the player is aware of the risks involved and takes all reasonable precautions to avoid harm.

Wembanyama, who has his sights set on the prize, will take care to avoid doing anything that would prevent him from being added to the elite NBA roster and if that means injuries so be it. All we have to do is to marvel at his plays and wait for the 2023 Draft to happen so that we can see which lucky team will tank him.
