Iconic Poolbeg Towers Set for Two-Year Restoration Project

Dublin’s beloved Poolbeg Towers, a prominent symbol of the city’s skyline, are about to undergo a major makeover. The distinctive red-and-white chimneys, which have graced the Dublin skyline since 1969 and 1977, have begun to show signs of wear and tear in recent years. This has prompted the initiation of a comprehensive restoration project that will see the historic structures restored to their former glory.

The restoration work, estimated to cost up to €5 million, will involve repairing and repainting the towering chimneys for two years. The project, scheduled for 2024 and 2025, aims to address the structural integrity of the iconic landmarks, ensuring they remain a cherished symbol for the Dublin community for years to come.

Speaking to the press, Dermot Lacey, councillor for Pembroke and former Lord Mayor of Dublin, expressed his delight at the commencement of the restoration project, highlighting the importance of preserving these iconic structures. “Dubliners like the chimneys, they’ve become iconic symbols of Dublin. They should be kept in good condition,” Lacey emphasized.

According to Lovin Dublin, the restoration effort is a collaborative endeavour between the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and Dublin City Council, with a focus on the historical significance and future role of the Poolbeg site. The spokesperson for ESB emphasized the site’s role in supporting ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy and Ireland’s emissions reduction targets.

The Poolbeg Towers, standing over 207 meters tall, have become an integral part of Dublin’s identity and are cherished for their unique presence in the city. As they undergo this extensive restoration, the chimneys are expected to reclaim their position as a stunning and enduring symbol of Dublin’s skyline.
