Lovers of Literature can prepare to attend the Prague Book World International book fair. The event will happen from Thursday, May 23, 2024, to Sunday, May, 26 at the Výstaviště grounds.

This year’s edition features the project dubbed “Das Buch”. It aims to expose the public to extensive German-language literature. This differs from earlier editions where one particular country is chosen as a guest of honor.

“Das Buch will present contemporary literature from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in its entirety — from fiction and children’s books to philosophy, comics, slam poetry, and zines,” said the event’s spokesperson, Pavla Umlaufová in a press release.

Moreover, acclaimed German authors Judith Hermann and Reiner Stach will grace the literary festival. Austrian author Tonio Schachinger, winner of the 2023 German Book Prize, and Swiss writer Peter Stamm will also be present. Czech writer, Michael Stavaric will also present his work. Stavaric prides himself on the Austrian State Prize several times. Most of his writing is on Children’s and Young People’s Literature.

“Our common goal is to present the latest trends in German-language literature, which, of course, also reflect social developments in these countries,” explained Lorenza Faessler, deputy head of mission at the Swiss embassy in Prague.

Visitors can expect to familiarize themselves with contemporary topics like sustainable book production. The festival will cover other touching subjects including biographical comics addressing autism and the writing conditions for modern-day female writers.

“In particular, we are touching on topics such as sustainable book production, biographical comics dealing with autism, for example, or the conditions in which women write today,” added Faessler.

This 29th Book World Fair edition falls in the same year as Franz Kafka’s 100th-anniversary celebration since his death. Thus the festival will feature events in his honor. One of Kafka’s main biographers, Reiner Stach will attend the event among other planned activities to bring Kafka’s legacy to life.

Beyond creating the three-volume award-winning Kafka biography, the Kafka website is the brainchild of Stach. He also has plans underway for a television series about Kafka.

Still, on Kafka’s anniversary celebrations, Austrian cartoonist and illustrator Nicolas Mahler will present his comic biography, Completely Kafka.

Moreover, festival guests can look forward to the “Literature as the Voice of Freedom” section. It will be a public platform dedicated to authors fighting for freedom. The program will also feature Czech authors’ works interpreted into English and other world languages.
