Dublin Airport is set to elevate the plane-spotting experience with the announcement of a new dedicated viewing area for aviation enthusiasts. The proposed Aircraft Observation Facility is designed to provide a comfortable and safe space for the community to enjoy close-up views of aircraft movements, offering a clear vantage point of the south runway and the cross-wind runway at Dublin Airport.
The planned facility, to be located on the well-known plane-spotting area, “The Mound,” on Old Airport Road, would feature an elevated covered platform with seating and lighting, promising an enhanced viewing experience. With a dedicated car park boasting 22 parking spaces, including facilities for individuals with reduced mobility and families, along with bike parking, the new space aims to cater to a wide range of visitors, offering convenience and accessibility.
Graeme McQueen, media relations manager of Dublin Airport, emphasized the importance of the new facility, stating that it will not only provide a prime plane-spotting location but also serve as an interface between the airport and the local community. Recognizing the area’s historical significance as an informal plane-spotting hub over the past 40 years, the airport is committed to enhancing safety and enjoyment for visitors through the establishment of a more formal facility.
Gary McLean, Managing Director of Dublin Airport, highlighted the significance of such observation facilities at airports worldwide and underlined the community’s strong connection to “The Mound,” describing it as a rite of passage for kids in Dublin to watch planes land and take off at the airport from this iconic spot.
