Kampa Park’s story stretches back centuries. The island, formed by the Vltava River and its offshoot, the Devil’s Stream, was first mentioned in 1169. Its name may come from the Latin “campus” (field) or the Czech “zakampi” (shady spot). Over time, Kampa changed from farmland to a hub of water-powered industry.

The park we know today took shape in the mid-20th century. Gardens once owned by noble families were joined to create a public space. The famous mill wheel, a reminder of Kampa’s industrial past, remains a popular photo spot.

Attractions and Timeless Charm

Visitors this summer will find Kampa Park both familiar and fresh. Features include:

– A children’s play area with Prague-themed equipment

– An open-air gallery showcasing local artists

– Improved access to the Devil’s Stream for small boat tours

The park’s famous statues, including the giant crawling babies by David Cerny, have been cleaned and restored. Picnic areas have been expanded, with new benches and tables added throughout the grounds.

A Green Escape in the Heart of Prague

Despite its central location, Kampa Park offers a peaceful retreat from city life. Its grassy slopes are perfect for picnics, sunbathing, or simply relaxing with a book. The park’s trees provide welcome shade on hot summer days.

Local resident Jana Novotna, 62, expressed excitement about the changes: “I’ve been coming to Kampa since I was a child. It’s wonderful to see it getting the care it deserves while keeping its special character.”

Planning Your Visit

Kampa Park is open daily and free to enter. It’s easily reached by tram or a short walk from Charles Bridge. The renovated park will be officially reopened on July 1st with a day of music, food, and family activities.

City tourism director Petr Slepicka advises visitors to come early: “Kampa is always popular, but we expect it to be busier than ever this summer. Morning or late afternoon are great times to enjoy the park at its most peaceful.”

As Prague continues to evolve, Kampa Park stands as a bridge between past and present. Its renovation ensures this beloved space will continue to charm locals and tourists alike for generations to come.
