Rome will celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of Rome, also known as the Battle of Monte Cassino, which is labeled as the bloodiest battle in the history of the Second World War. During this battle, the allied nations united against the Germans in Italy in a series of battles in an attempt to defeat the Germans. From January to May, the American, British, Indian, and New Zealand troops launched a series of failed attacks. The Polish came to the rescue to help defeat the Germans on March 18, securing the long-awaited victory. Rome is celebrating this day on Saturday, May 18, and every Roman, visitor, or tourist is welcome to be part of the celebration.
While the victory came on May 18, the Allied troops continued to push the German troops to the north. Italy was finally liberated on June 5, 1944, marking the end of the German occupation of Italy and a new beginning for the country.
However, the battle did not end easily, as the German troops were well-prepared and not willing to give up easily. As a result, more than fifty thousand allied nation troops were killed, making it the bloodiest battle in the Second World War. On the other hand, more than twenty thousand German troops lost their lives, leading to their retreat.
May 18 has remained a special day in Italy’s history, and the people of Rome will be remembering the fallen soldiers. The embassies of the countries involved will also have celebrations, including laying wreaths to honor their brave men.
