Rasnov Citadel is a national monument of Romania and is rather stunning. The castle-like fortress dominates the skyline of Rasnov and beyond.

It is a medieval and pre-modern citadel that dates from the 14th to the 17th centuries, which offered refuge for townspeople and villagers in times of war

Many tourists come here to discover the fortification’s tumultuous history which dates back to the thirteenth century and includes sieges and heroic confrontations

Rasnov Fortress also known as Cetatea Rasnov is a wonderful, historic site in Transylvania.

They built the fortress as part of a defense system for the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions.

The fortress’s location is on the route of the invading armies, which were coming via the Bran pass, through Rasnov, then onward to Brasov.

Taking refuge in the citadel was a great place for the locals to survive any invasion, and this resulted in many people staying in the fortification for decades.

You’ll find a taxi queue near the bus stops to the left of the traffic circle mentioned above, only ride in taxis that have fare rates posted in their vehicles.

Trains also run from Brasov to Rasnov. If you’re staying in and around the Piata Sfatului, it’s close to a 40-minute walk to Brasov’s Train Station.

If you’re coming from Sibiu, take the train to Brasov first or plan on a 2-hour drive if you’ve rented a car.

The Citadel of Rașnov is open for visits daily, including the days of legal celebrations like Easter, Christmas, and the New Year, the program remaining unchanged.

Take time to see the stone houses just past the old Saxon school. Unfortunately, the school is not open to the public.

The fortification was built and rebuilt between the 14th and 17th centuries, as it passed between the Hungarian and Saxon occupations.

Different craft stalls where they can see metal craftsmen and artisans at work, and the feudal art museum gathers pieces and weapons from the inhabitants.

Dino Park opened in 2015 and became the largest dinosaur park in South-Eastern Europe.

They also have a 9d theatre and a 360° cinema for additional entertainment for all guests.

Children can enjoy the adventure trails, a zip line, and a variety of playgrounds. Thus, Dino Park is a great place for a day out for the entire family.

9. To reach the top of the fascinating Rasnov citadel you can ride the elevator or hike

To reach Rasnov Citadel, you can ride the elevator to the top of the steep hill it calls home. You can access the lift from near Piața Unirii via a signposted archway.

A return ride costs 12 lei, which is £2.40 to go up and down. The ride is fantastic for views and saves your legs a hard hike up to the top.

If you fancy a bit of a hike, you can walk to or from the citadel which is mainly along roads, the walk has some splendid views on it, mainly tree-lined routes.

The walk also passes the main car park for the citadel, handy to know for visitors arriving on a road trip.

10. The astonishing Kronhaus is the best place to stay when visiting Brasov’s 

Kronhaus is located in Brasov’s historical center. Free WIFI access is available. Some rooms have a mountain view and some come with a city view.
