Yohani Diloka De Silva born July 30, 1993 is a Sri Lankan Singer, Songwriter, Rapper, Music Producer, and businesswoman. Born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Yohani gained recognition for her rap cover of ‘Deviyange Bare’ and released many covers of her singing and rapping which has earned her the title “Rap Princess” of Sri Lanka.

Yohani is one of the most popular singers of Sri Lanka today.  She also has skills like singing, YouTubing, songwriter, rapper, modelling and music composing. She also runs a business of musical instruments imports and exports.

Yohani, is a daughter of an upper-middle family, her father (Prasanna de Silva) is a war veteran who is a former Army officer Major General and her mother (Dinithi de Silva) is a former hostess at Sri Lankan Airlines. Let’s delve into the top 10 cool facts about Yohani.

Yohani started her career as a YouTuber and gradually gained popularity on different platforms too. She soon gained recognition for her rap cover of ‘Deviyange Bare’ and released many covers of her singing and rapping which have earned her the title “Rap Princess” of Sri Lanka. She is the first Sri Lankan woman singer who crossed 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube.

Yohani clocked the  largest number of views on 122 million perspectives for a YouTube video “Manike Mage Hithe” cover melody in May 2021. She had likewise finished her introduction Sinhala collection which highlights twelve tunes and plans to dispatch it during a live show around December 2021.

Her mother played an important part in her success as her mother is the one who recognize her talent and skills in music and singing when she was a child, and provided her with better opportunities to learn the skills timely. And that’s also the reason she achieved this success at a young age.

Yohani’s childhood was unlike that of her peers, as it was at the height of Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war, where her father was at the forefront. She was also heavily involved in sports, as a celebrated swimmer and water polo player at Visakha Vidyalaya eventually leading to her becoming a school colours holder. Visakha Vidyalaya was founded in 1917 by the late Mrs. Jeremias Dias as an institution of learning for Buddhist girls in Sri Lanka at a time when such institutions were rare.

Visakha Vidyalaya was conferred Grade I status in 1947 and is the first national girls’ school in Sri Lanka. The school consists of a primary and a secondary school with classes ranging from Grade 1 to 13. At present, there are approximately 4500 students on roll with a qualified academic staff strength of 215.

Yohani completed her higher education in Logistics Management and Professional Accounting from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University prior to pursuing her career in music as an artist.

She achieved her master’s degree in accounting in Australia. Her years in the United Kingdom right after school helped broaden her horizons of the world as well as music. In February 2020, Prima Kottu Mee selected Yohani as their Brand Ambassador for a long time, which stands to be one of the very first of her huge brand supports. In the months that followed, Yohani got endorsed by Red Bull Records for a solo project and her introduction single ‘Aaye’ debuted in August 2020.

Due to their father’s military position, both girls grew up in various places including Colombo District, different bases in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh. During the prime age of schooling, they both grew up and schooled together in Colombo District. Major General Prasanna de Silva, WWV, RWP, RSP was a Sri Lankan senior army officer, who served as the General Officer Commanding, 56 Division, Commander of Special Forces Brigade and he was the Colonel of the Regiment of the Commando Regiment.

He joined Sri Lanka Army in 1982 during the early phase of Eelam War I. Brigadier Silva’s little-known exploits included the coordination of Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol which carried out the most complex and dangerous military operations when he was a Lieutenant Colonel.

10. She Learned Hindi to Sing for Bollywood

The Sri Lankan singer cannot resist the allure of Bollywood. In an interview, Yohani de Silva said that she likes Bollywood songs very much. Yohani has also learned Hindi as she wants to sing Bollywood songs. On the day of expressing that wish, her hopes were really fulfilled in a few days. She recorded the song for the Bollywood film Shiddat on September 29, 2021. She is currently based in Mumbai, India.

Bollywood celebs like Amitab Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Tiger Shroff made Instagram reels on the song ‘manike Mage Hithe’ Another video on the song which went on social media was of an IndiGo air hostess. The song was created sitting on a piano and a phone recording. The original song was sung by Satheeshan Rathnayaka and the lyrics were written by Dukan ARX.
