Chang Chen is a Taiwanese actor and singer born on 14^th October 1976 in Taipei, Taiwan. He is the descendant of Chang Kuo-chu who was his father and Chao Hsin-Jan his mother. His brother is Hans Chang who is also an actor.  

He walked down the aisle on 18^th November 2013 with his four years girlfriend called Ann Zhuang. He has one daughter named Yuan Yuan Chang. He speaks fluent Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English languages.

Chang Chen attended the Fu-Hsin Arts and Trade School.  He began his acting career at an early age from the fact that he was brought up in a family of actors.

In 1980 he earned attention in acting at the age of 14 when he took the lead role in A Brighter Summer Day.

The acting career of Chang Chen began at an early age in 1991. At this time, he was only around fourteen years of age. His passion and talent for acting were noted right from his first film where he was featured.

The Taipei-born actor played the lead role in master filmmaker Edward Yang’s internationally acclaimed coming-of-age saga “A Brighter Summer Day”. The title of the drama was derived from the lyrics “Are You Lonesome Tonight” by Elvis Presley.

The drama was quite a success. It was awarded the Special July Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. This award is considered one of the most competitive film festivals and the largest film festival in Asia.

This four-hour drama helped him to gain a lot of popularity as a young actor.   

2. He Stepped Away from Acting and Resurfaced After 5 years

Chang Chen had become a bit popular after his first drama act hit so well and was awarded by the Tokyo International Film Festival. However, he stepped away from acting in 1991 and resurfaced back in 1966.

The film Happy Together is one of Chang Chen’s earliest films which was acted in 1997. This was a Hong Kong romantic drama film that was directed by Wong Kar-Wai.

The movie received a lot of positive reviews and was regarded as one of the best LGBT films in the New Queer Cinema. It was also screened at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival.

 It also received a great ranking in the British Film Institute as the 3^rd greatest LGBT film of all time.   

4. He Rose to Fame in the Film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”

Chang Chen rose to fame in the year 2000. This was in the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” where he played his role as “Dark Cloud”. The film was directed by Ang Lee.

The film features actors of Chinese ethnicity including Chang Chen, Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat, and Zhang Ziyi. The film was premiered on 18^th May 2000 at the Cannes Film Festival and later on 8^th December 2000, it was released in the United States.

The film has over the years received a lot of nominations for awards. It is often praised for its outstanding martial art sequence, cinematography, and its story direction.

Chang Chen has been so successful in his career as an actor. The sensational actor has been nominated thrice for the Best Actor Award at the Golden Horse Awards.

He was first nominated in 2005, 2006, and 2014 respectively. In 2006 he was nominated for his exceptional performance in his role in “The Go Master”. He earned his third nomination for the film “Brotherhood of Blades” in 2014.
