‘Love is a beautiful thing,’ is a phrase that has been commonly used throughout generations. Not all people are lucky to find it, but those who do have testified that it is worth it. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter and Shawn Corey Carter alias Jay-Z are a true depiction of the chosen few who’ve found love and stuck by it. Theirs has been a journey full of ups and downs, especially considering their place in the entertainment industry, but what they have has stood the test of time.

From a secret wedding to surprise album drops, smash collaborations, infidelity rumors, and adventures in parenting, the fiercely private pair have seen it all. Having been the most famous and popular couple in the industry, we sure would need to take a closer look at their relationship, and perhaps, we could learn a tip or two. 1.They Were Friends Before They Became Lovers

In the current hook-up culture, few people are willing to grow and blossom as friends first, but this lot knew better. Beyoncé once told Seventeen that she first met Jay-Z when she was 18. In an interview with Oprah on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Beyoncé said that they were friends for a year and a half before they officially started going on dates. This played a role in cementing their foundation as friends before they got romantically involved. 

2.The Carters Started Producing Music Together

As soon as they started dating, the couple continuously appeared in each other’s musical projects. Could it have been a way of making their debut as a couple? Perhaps, or not. In 2003, the Brooklyn-bred artist and entrepreneur released a single, Bonnie and Clyde featuring Bey which truly sparked curiosity, and dare I say, even rumors that the duo could be dating.

In the same year, when Beyoncé dropped her single ‘Crazy in love’ featuring Jay Z, which convinced the public that they were in a romantic relationship. However, despite the evident chemistry onscreen, the two did not come out publicly to declare that they were together. It turns out that Bey was following the advice of a legend in her sphere, Oprah, who warned her against making their relationship public so soon.

In later years, they continued making music together and featuring in each other’s videos. For instance, in 2006, Beyoncé released ‘Upgrade U’ and ‘DejaVu’ which she collaborated with her current husband. In the same year, Jay Z dropped the album ‘Kingdom Come’ and involved Beyoncé in the duet ‘Hollywood’.  By 2014, the couple had sold over 300 million records.

Beyoncé’s ‘Crazy in Love’ which featured Jay Z was one for the books as radio and TV stations would play it on air for years to come. As a result of this magnificently written and performed piece of art, the Carters won a Grammy award in 2004 as the best R&B track of the year.

Undoubtedly, the couple was happy because they were well-received in the industry, and this may have been a driving force to do more collaborations. They could later sell over 300 million records together.

4.They Finally Tied the Knot in 2008

This beloved couple kept their relationship under wraps for as long as possible, and their wedding could not have been more private. On April 4th, they officiated their relationship in an intimate ceremony. The duo, when asked about their marriage, have admitted that keeping it private has enabled them to sustain the sacredness of their relationship. Jay-Z also stated in an interview that maintaining high levels of privacy in his relationship has helped him remain sane in this industry.

5.The Couple Supported Each Other Through Their Loss

Loss is inevitable, and sometimes, it can make or break relationships. Like every other human being, the Carters have had their fair share. Around 2010 and 2011, the couple experienced a miscarriage. They stood by each other through this tough time. Beyoncé confessed that she perceived pain and loss as a gift because it taught her to be a mother to herself first before she mothered someone else.

This has kept the fire and warmth in their family. Jay-Z has also spoken about how his children have grounded him, making him spend more time with his treasured family.

8.The Couple Has Overcome Stormy Situations in Their Relationship

In 2016, Beyoncé released an album Lemonade, which Jay-Z’s infidelity inspired. In an interview with the New York Times, as reported by Vogue in 2017, Jay Z admitted that he had been unfaithful due to undealt with childhood trauma. Jay-Z also released an album that displayed his remorse for causing his wife pain. Such a stunt would have broken them, but it didn’t. The couple used art as therapy to process the strenuous state of their hearts and prevailed over it.

Since they went public, Mr. and Mrs. Carter have consistently been seen together in all key events. They mostly show a unified front, even when things weren’t all so rosy.
