50 Most Famous Harry Potter Quotes of All Time

Harry Potter is one very beloved children’s story, and rightfully so. It has been an amazing part of most people’s childhood memories and in fact, many people have admitted that their lives would be different if they had never come across Harry Potter. With that said, Harry Potter is not only an amazing piece of literature that was adapted into a film, but it also has some amazing and wise quotes that help you carry on through the journey of life regardless of your age. We have to admit that J.K Rowlings did such an amazing work with this and it just goes to show how talented she is as a writer. Here is a list of some of the most famous and wisest Harry Potter quotes of all time.

1. “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light” Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

As much as it is a witty phrase that Dumbledore found a clever way of delivering, it does hold a lot of water when you think about it. Happiness at the end of the day is a personal choice. You literally choose whether or not to be happy regardless of how hard life is at the moment. This will only happen though, if you remember to always turn on that light. The light of positivity and optimism, the light of hope and sure enough the light of resilience and determination.

2. “Of course, it’s happening inside your head Harry, why should that mean that it’s not real?”- Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Even when something is just alive in your head, it doesn’t mean that it is not real. Why? Because sure enough just by thinking it, you have given it life already and it is only a matter of time before you get to actualize it. That’s why dreams come to pass and why we always experience Deja Vu. The thing is, as an individual, you have the power to decide whether or not the scenario happening in your head will be actualized into reality.

3. “My mum always said things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end” Luna Lovegood

Prayitno, CC BY-SA 2.5, via Wikimedia Commons

Indeed! That’s why they say what was meant to be will be no matter what. In other words, you really don’t have to force anything. You never have to feel bad about ‘losing an opportunity.’ Sometimes we feel like we have lost something and that’s the end of it. However, I do agree with Luna’s mum. Things we think are lost and will never be recovered, have a way of coming back to us. So don’t worry, your path is yours and yours alone and no one, not even it ‘being lost’ can take it away from you.

4. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies… but a great deal more to stand up to your friends” Albus Dumbledore

Bravery is an admirable thing, no questions asked. Unfortunately, not many people possess the art of bravery. However, as Albus summarizes it, it takes more strength and bravery to stand up to your friends. Why? Because friends mean a lot to you and when you realize they are doing something that is not good and it’s actually working to your disadvantage, having the courage to tell them off may not be there. Hence, it indeed takes way more courage to stand up to your friends and tell them point-blank that what they are doing isn’t right at all. Whether or not you will lose them, shouldn’t even matter.

5. “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on” Sirius Black

FenixoAlbus, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Couldn’t be said better. All of us, as human beings, we do have some light and darkness in us. In fact, it is usually said that we all can be evil because of the darkness within, but those who choose to keep the darkness in check and control it are what makes a difference between good and evil. As Sirius puts it, all that matters at the end of the day is what we choose to do with the darkness and light within us. That is really what makes and creates the difference.

6. “It is the quality of one’s convictions that determines success, not the number of followers” Remus Lupin

Miss Vichan, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Just having a large number of followers isn’t enough. In fact, it has never been enough and that’s why it is so important to think about the convictions you have. In other words, what you really stand for as a person and its quality because again if the convictions aren’t really of good quality, then they are not helping anyone. Thus your convictions have to be having the interests of the people at heart. Your followers will follow you diligently and even be loyal to you because they are confident when it comes down to it, you will always watch over them.

7. “You have got to start standing up to people, Neville” Ron Weasley

蔡沅珅, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The best way to stand up to a bully is to actually show them that you have the courage to stand up to them and you aren’t easily shaken down. It applies the same way here. In life, you always have to stand up for yourself otherwise you will easily be a doormat that everyone can step on unapologetically. The moment you show people that you can stand up for yourself, they always end up having a profound respect towards you as they know you will not take their mistreatments, without doing anything.

8. “Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself” Hermione Granger

Judor92, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Fear is a very interesting thing because it usually grips you so hard and convinces you that something that is actually nonexistent, holds some kind of power over you. Thus, when you fear something as simple as the name of something, you will for sure end up fearing even the thing that this name represents. Given how fear is contagious, and most of our fears are usually geared towards something that is unknown, it doesn’t come as a surprise that this is exactly what will end up happening. Fearing even the thing itself just because the name alone scared the hell out of you.

9. “When in doubt, go to the library” Ron Weasley

I totally agree! Information after all is power. Hence when you are in doubt, head to the library, find a book, and clear out your confusion. It’s really as simple as that. Instead of arguing it out and even continuing to doubt yourself even more, have a book that will help in clearing out that one thing that is not so clear in your mind.

10. “If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals” Sirius Black

The thing about inferiority and superiority is that they usually bring out the true colours of someone. Give a man power or take it away from him, and you get to see who he truly is. Thus, Sirius made a good point. If you want to get a glimpse of the true self of someone, just observe how he treats those he deems as his subordinates or those inferior to him. It sheds light on who he really is as a person and hence when he gets even more power, you can imagine how bad he will be.

11. “I’m hoping to do some good in the world!” Hermione Granger

I wish every human being alive would have this kind of attitude. I really think that the world would be so much different. There would be no wars, no prejudice, discrimination or racism. In essence, we would have world peace actually. It’s that simple. Anyway, Hermoine gets to challenge all of us. How many times have thought about and made the declaration to make some good in the world? Leave alone actually doing it?

12. “Fame’s a fickle friend, Harry” Gilderoy Lockhart

Robert Clarke, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Indeed it is. Fame is quite fickle and that’s why the advice always is, to take care it doesn’t get in your head. Do not for a second think that you are invincible and untouchable just because you are famous. As quickly as that fame came, it’s how it can easily dissipate. Thus, humble yourself, and continue being yourself no matter how great a following you have.

13. “You are protected, in short, by your ability to love!” Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Sean Thomas on Unsplash

Whoever said love can heal and conquer everything, knew exactly what they were saying. Love is everything and with love, many of the problems we are having today wouldn’t even be an issue. Albus put it quite well. By having the ability to love, you are generally protected and will be on the safe side. After all, you won’t have enemies.

14. “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love” – Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Rae Tian on Unsplash

This quote may sound a bit harsh and mean but it isn’t. The dead are dead and gone and there’s nothing you can do about it. Hence, do not waste your pity because there are those still living and especially those living without any form of love, who have a really hard time with the living itself. Therefore, if there is someone who should be pitied, it is that person who doesn’t have any form of love whatsoever and they are all alone. For them, they do not have the peace that death may bring to them. They still have to face what tomorrow will bring.

15. “It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more” Albus Dumbledore

Fear of the unknown is the most confusing fear there ever is. You are gripped with so much uncertainty and fear that is so ungrounded and shouldn’t even be gripping you in the first place. This kind of fear curtails so much progress and the unfortunate thing is that you are not even sure that whatever you are fearing will come to pass. Hence, even upon death, people fear it because of the unknown. Not being sure what they will encounter on the other side and hence fearing it so much.

16. “Dumbledore says people find it far easier to forgive others for being wrong than being right” Hermione Granger

I guess the truth really hurts indeed. That’s why it is so much simpler to forgive someone because they did something wrong but not really because they are right and what they said or did was because they were right. So indeed, forgiving someone for being right is far harder.

17.”It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live” Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Ah, yes. Dreaming is perfect and even encouraged but if you dwell too much on it, you might very easily forget to live. You might live inside your head for too long in the name of dreaming and soon enough, it will be just that. It remains to be a dream and a fantasy and not really a reality. So indeed Albus had a point. As much as dreams are amazing, do not dwell on them too much and forget that the reality of living is waiting for you.

18. “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”- Albus Dumbledore

Choices are a big part of us. They show where our moral compass is and where our head is at. So indeed Albus Dumbledore made a great point. At the end of the day, our choices will show others who we really are. It’s not even our abilities per se, but the choices we make. They help others have a clear understanding of what we are thinking, our principles, and who we truly are on the inside.

19. “We’re all human, aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same and worth saving” – Kingsley Shacklebolt

Indeed. As human beings, human life is sacred and important and no matter the status quo, our lives are worth the same and worth saving. It doesn’t matter where you come from, who you are affiliated with, whether you are rich or poor. In the long run, human life is important and sacred and should be carried as such.

20. “It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well”- Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Some of the most respected and benevolent leaders are those who didn’t even think they would ever lead. They didn’t plan on it and it was thrust on them but surprisingly enough, they managed to hack it so well that you may think it is something they always planned on.

21. “You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think that we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble?” Albus Dumbledore

In a way, this quote encourages us that even if we lose someone, they never really leave us. They will always be a part of us and whenever we are in trouble, somehow they are there for us. In essence, it encourages us that we shouldn’t feel so sad because of the loss, but rather always remember that our loved ones will forever be a part of us. Whether we are aware of it or not, they will always be there for us, surrounding us with love and safety.

22. “I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth bother in’ with’” Rubeus Hagrid

There is no better way to say it. Never be ashamed of who you are and what you are or stand for. Being ashamed of who you are creates a loophole and this is what makes people find something to pull you down with. So yes, you are what you are and you should never be ashamed no matter what. Be proud of yourself and always wear your identity on your sleeves very proudly.

23. “‘He must have known I’d run out on you.’ ‘No,’ Harry corrected him. ‘He must’ve always known you’d always want to come back’” Harry Potter

Joella Marano, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Goodbyes are difficult but with the assurance Harry gives, it makes you realize that for the right people, you will always go back. Even more importantly, their knowing that you will always come back is what really matters and creates the whole difference.

24. “Anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve” Ginny Weasley

Grandmagrettle, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Oh yes! Everything in this world is possible. It just requires you to have a bit of backbone and some nerve. With that kind of attitude, you find that in the long, if you put your mind to it, you will achieve anything you set your mind to. And by anything, I mean anything. Hence, whenever you are going through your business, always remember Ginny’s words. That all it takes are guts and nerves.

25. “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it” Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

You know how it is said that the tongue has so much power? Albus couldn’t agree more. Words have so much power and they can be a source of magic. It is therefore very important to watch your words always. Be deliberate about what you choose to utter because, at the end of the day, they can be a source of blessing and curse to someone. They indeed can either be a source of healing or a source of inflicting pain.

26. “The happiest man on earth would be able to use the Mirror of Erised like a normal mirror, that is, he would look into it and see himself exactly as he is” – Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

If only we can all look into the mirror and be at peace with what we see, I believe that’s the time we would all genuinely love ourselves and wholly embrace who we are. The major problem is that we usually deceive ourselves with what is confronting us from the mirror. We refuse to clearly accept who we are and hence live the rest of our lives deceiving ourselves.

27. “What’s comin’ will come, and we’ll meet it when it does” Rubeus Hagrid

In other words, fate is fate and nothing you can do will change it. The best thing you can do is simply embrace it because fighting it is what makes the whole journey depressing and disappointing. Rubeus’ free spirit and attitude, where he is coming to terms with destiny gives someone hope. It makes you realize that life is so much easier when you just live and go with the flow of it instead of having too many unrealistic expectations. Why? Because at the end of the day, whatever’s coming will still come anyway. No point in fighting it and trying to avoid it.

28. “We can’t choose our fate, but we can choose others. Be careful in knowing that” Albus Dumbledore

Exactly! As noted earlier, fate is fate and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. However, what we can do freely is choose our friends and the people we choose to walk the journey of life with. Thus, it is very important that we do this carefully. It is important we choose our circles and the people we surround ourselves with because that is a choice we make freely and knowingly unlike fate.

29. “Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realize that one day, amongst their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!” Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Sure enough, if you oppress someone long enough, do not sit pretty thinking they will remain weak forever. A time will come when they will indeed rise, and gain just enough strength to fight back. Therefore, tyrants know to fear the people they oppress because they can wake up one day and the tides will have completely changed. That’s why they are some of the most fearful people, always living in fear wondering when their day has come.

30. “Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open” Albus Dumbledore

Absolutely! If our agenda is identical to our heart’s intentions, then that is truly all that matters. After all, it is not so much what someone says or what their habit is, but rather what their true intention is.

31. “No story lives unless someone wants to listen. The stories we love best do live in us forever. So whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home” J.K. Rowling

Daniel Ogren, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

This is the beauty of stories. They live in us forever because we want to listen to them in the first place. It otherwise beats its whole purpose if people don’t get to hear it first. So in a nutshell, stories live forever in us, the moment they have been told.

32.“It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love” Horace Slughorn

This is why if there is something you cannot fake, it is feelings. Something like love or animosity is just something that is part of your emotions and if they are very strongly felt, you simply cannot hide them. It is indeed impossible to imitate love or manufacture it and actually keep the façade for long. It simply can’t be done because before you know it, the mask falls and the true nature of your feelings shows.

33. “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things — friendship and bravery” – Hermione Granger

Judor92, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

As much as knowledge is power, you cannot only rely on it. Hermione did have a point actually. There are far more important things in life than just being smart. These are friendship and bravery because when you have people who love you surrounding you, you always feel like you can conquer almost everything. Then when you have the confidence and bravery, you find it easy to face life head-on without ever doubting yourself. What would you need therefore with these?

34. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided” Albus Dumbledore

This quote couldn’t have been said better. There is always power in numbers and any front that stands together, nothing can shake it down. Being weak is a weakness itself and nothing much can be achieved if you are in a team that doesn’t cherish togetherness and teamwork.

35. “Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it” – Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

Absolutely! Refusing to face your pain and dealing with it head-on will only make things worse later on. It’s almost like trying to put a band-aid on a broken bone. Utterly useless. Thus, when in pain, allow yourself to fully feel it, wallow in the pain, and cry your heart out. That way, the healing process comes quickly and the acceptance makes it a bit easier to deal with. Otherwise, numbing all the feelings will prove a bad decision when all the pain and emotions finally come crashing down.

36. “Time is Galleons, little brother,” Fred Weasley

Niccolò Caranti, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Time is priceless and important. Just like how important and needed Galleons were between the 16th and 18th centuries during the age of sail, so is time. Time dictates so much in our lives and even helps us as human beings be able to plan for the future.

37. “Yeah, size is no guarantee of power,”– George Weasley

Prayitno, CC BY-SA 2.5, via Wikimedia Commons

Remember the story of David and Goliath? Indeed size doesn’t matter when it comes to power. Power is really all in the mind and the smarts to use it. It doesn’t matter how physically strong and big you are. If you aren’t clever and smart enough to command the room, and even manage a following, then you may be a giant and still don’t have enough power to lead and be listened to.

38. “There’s things more importan’ than keepin’ a job” – Rubeus Hagrid

Couldn’t agree more honestly. As much as having a job is important to some, there are more important things. Your mental health for one really matters. Thus, if keeping that job proves to be threatening, then is there really any point in keeping it?

39. “Curiosity is not a sin. But we should exercise caution with our curiosity” Albus Dumbledore

They say curiosity killed the cat. I bet the proverbial cat stuck its nose where it wasn’t supposed to and that finally caught up with it. That is not to say curiosity is bad or even prohibited. Not at all! Being curious is great because that’s how you get to learn new things and even experience an adventure because you’ll be seeing and experiencing everything for the first time. However, as Dumbledore cautions, it is important to exercise curiosity with caution. You may be too curious and end up knowing things you shouldn’t know because the problem with knowing is that you cannot unknow.

40. “The ones that love us never really leave us. You can always find them in here” Sirius Black

FenixoAlbus, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

As noted earlier, goodbyes are almost always difficult. However, we should always remember that those who love us never really leave. Somehow, they always find their way back to us.

41. “Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy” Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

This is the hardest choice to make if we are being quite honest. Most times we tend to lean towards choosing something that is easy to handle and achieve rather than what is right. As much as choosing the right path is the encouraged one, as life would have it, what is right isn’t always so easy to come by and actually tends to be one of the hardest paths to follow. But as Dumbledore reminds us, in the long run, those are the two choices we are usually faced with and it is very important that we know how to choose.

42. “Ah, music. A magic beyond all we do here!” Albus Dumbledore

Most definitely! Music is the one thing that can soothe a hurting heart and somehow make it all better in the long run. It is magic all by itself! Think about it. Whenever you’re feeling down or even extremely happy, having music that backs up all those emotions, somehow just completes the whole picture. So yes, it is magic! It heals and soothes so much.

43. “I think I’ll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up — it always does in the end” –  Luna Lovegood

Cor-Sa on DeviantArt, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

This witty quote will absolutely make you smile. Especially if you love pudding and know how it usually works. Eventually, it does turn up and that is something you can always count on it to do. It is actually more reliable than some people in our lives.

44. “Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike” Albus Dumbledore

The problem with indifference and negligence is that it makes you turn down your nose on even things that should really matter. That’s why the wise Albus is making a note that most times, they cause more damage than just dislike. Disliking is way simpler because it’s simply deciding something isn’t your forte. Indifference and neglect however is making a deliberate choice to ignore something, whether or not it’s important and matters.

45. “Youth can not know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if they forget what it was to be young” Albus Dumbledore

Indeed. As a youth or a young person, you still have a lot to live for and so much to look forward to. You therefore have no idea what it feels like to be old and packaged with so much knowledge of life lessons and experiences. Older men however is a different story because they have been there, done that. They therefore cannot afford to forget what it was like to be young and even learn from the lessons they acquired while young.

46. “There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them” J.K Rowling

Daniel Ogren, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

This is exactly how deep friendships and loyal relationships end up being formed. Just experiencing and going through some things automatically makes you the best of friends. You tend to realize that you have overcome so many hurdles and still standing. I mean, what better way to like and stand by someone with whom you shared the most bizarre of experiences?

47. “Constant Vigilance!” Mad-Eye Moody

Oh yes! Vigilance is the one sure bet you have when it comes to winning in life. Resilience and vigilance simply teach you the art of determination and never giving up easily when faced with challenges along the way. So indeed, constant vigilance is the way to go. You can achieve and overcome any kind of hurdle with such an attitude.

48. “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure” Luna Lovegood

Prayitno, CC BY-SA 2.5, via Wikimedia Commons

Keen and quick intelligence is definitely a man’s greatest treasure. It shows the ability to quickly think on your feet and similarly arrive at a solution just as quickly. Witty people have this knack of always having a response to everything and absolutely nothing catches them by surprise. What better way to go on pursuing life when you always have a solution to everything and never allow anything to tear you down? Luna made a good point with this one. It is indeed a man’s greatest treasure to possess.

49. “After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure” Albus Dumbledore

HumMelissa_Glee, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

We have to admit that Albus Dumbledore has a way with words. Death to the adventurous and well-organized mind, is nothing to be scared of. They will look at it as the next adventure they get to experience especially because you have no idea what awaits you on the other side. Instead of being so afraid of the unknown, therefore, this is the kind of mind that will approach it with the attitude of, “can’t wait to see what happens in this other world.” With this kind of attitude, nothing will ever shake you down and hence a well-organized mind is indeed a superpower.

50. “It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be”Albus Dumbledore

Photo by Sean Thomas on Unsplash

Absolutely! It doesn’t really matter in what situation you are born in, good or bad. All that matters is what you grow up to be. The kind of principles and morals you end up acquiring as you go along the way. Thus, the background you were born into shouldn’t even play a role in how people perceive you. What people are more interested in, is the person you ended up growing into. What kind of personality do you possess and are you generally a good person? You could have been born a pauper but grow into being an evil or wonderful person. Whatever it is, that’s the phase people will judge you by.

Harry Potter is an amazing children’s story that has some good life lessons. These lessons can apply to anyone regardless of their age.
